Brain-death test dropped to boost organ donation - Times Online

I am currently on the organ donor register. These plans, however, are making me reconsider. How many more people will this deter from signing up to the donor register?

i already thought that was standard practise. it doesn’t really surprise me or put me off. if i’m dead i’m dead and i’m more than happy for people who need my organs to have them :)

The point is, they’re not performing the full checks that you are genuinely dead. The article then goes on to state several cases where 5 minutes after the heart stopping does not equal death.

I think I’m with you on this one Pewari – I don’t altogether trust the five minute rule, or a rushed medical diagnosis having seen doctors fail to even look at a patient during an appointment.

Quite honestly, if my heart’s not been beating for five minutes, I’d *rather* be dead than come back in a brain-damaged (i.e. from lack of oxygen to brain) state. Plus let’s face it, if I’m in a state where someone’s prepared to let my heart stop beating for five minutes without any resus etc., the odds are that I’m already deeply into the “broken and unrecoverable” stage. So I’ve no problem with being used as an organ donor at that point.

Personally, though, I still believe that organ donation should be an opt-out process, rather than the current opt-in. If someone feels strongly about not wanting to be used as a donor, it’s up to them to opt-out. Can’t be chuffed to find a donor card, or can’t be arsed with the paperwork? (Both common excuses for not opting in) Fine, you’re an organ donor.

Maybe I’m missing something, but to me that just makes sense.
