My very first audio post. Not particularly brilliant quality (especially as you can hear the kids talking in the background) but not bad for a first try.
Don’t worry, the whole blog isn’t going to become a podcast – I just might put some audio up every now and then. I’m experimenting.
It’s only about a minute and a half long – took me longer to work out how to get it to display here than it did to record it.
Feel free to skip it if you’re not interested, you miss nothing of major import. On the other hand, if you’re curious to find out what my voice sounds like… click away…

Of course, what you really need is video. :)

Pfft… then I’d have to tidy!

strange,
I guess it is like watching the movie of a book. You kind of imagine in your head what somebody will sound like, and then the voice sounds nothing like you perceived it.

I loved hearing your voice. I hope you do more of these. Have you considered doing a YouTube video? There are lots of people who just sit and chat to the camera. I love watching them and have made a few myself.

Wow. For someone who is verbally dyslexic, that was very well done. You have a wonderful speaking voice.
Don’t forget that podcasts were originally intended to be audio blog posts. Which is exactly what you posted. I loved it.
Most of the podcasts I listen to are 30-45min long but I found the short audio blog post you did a very nice change.
I listen to a lot of podcasts but I personally love the ones that are *not* pretending to be a radio show. The added benefit is that you don’t feel pressure to perform some acrobatic 30 minute sermon all the time. A 5 minute long audio post about something that’s bugging you or piqued your interest is much more interesting (more meat, less fluff) to me, forces you to have a point, and best of all lowers the barrier to entry so you’re more apt to do them more often.
And who says you have to do absolutely everything completely off the cuff. I’m not saying to read a script, but a short outline and having a point to it all sure makes things more interesting to the listener and would likely help focus you on the issue whatever it may be. Kind of like editing down a wordy-comment to something succinct and interesting. Which I have not done here. ;)
Apologies for the long comment, but after listening to it, I thought it was just brilliant in a lot of ways. Don’t give it up.

Spinky: awww, I’m sorry to have disappointed you. I have to say, I’ve found the reverse lately – seen photos of some of my favourite podcasters and found that really jarred with how I imagined them. So I do sympathise.
Tami: thank you. Actually, your video posts partly inspired me for this as well… I loved getting that extra window into your life. As for video posts here… I’m not sure. I don’t particularly *like* video of me. Also I’d have to tidy this study ;) Not ruling it out, but not leaping with enthusiasm either!!
Richard: I should clarify that I’m not truly dyslexic – certainly nothing diagnosed, I just feel like it sometimes – like my thoughts run faster than how the words come out so they come out jumbled (whereas in text I can touch type!)
I think I take after my father somewhat, who famously used to get the first letters of words mixed up in speech (aka spoonerisms) and then got sent to his room for swearing when he asked his mother to pass the sugar bowl at dinner time. (Think about it).
I also have many moments in conversation where I just cannot think of the word I mean and I end up having to dance around it with erms and “you know what I mean”s.
Have I mentioned how much I prefer the editability of text? ;)
Anyway thank you for your very long comment – it was lovely, and very encouraging. Is great to have my 1 minute 26 seconds well received! And I’d better stop writing this comment or it will get so long, no-one will bother reading it…

No no it wasn’t disappointing, I just thought you would sound older and more grown up – but you sound more like me – it’s making me realise that I am grown up, and I am not quite ready to accept that one yet! Wow that’s getting deep!

LOL… no I only pretend to be a grown up. I keep expecting an adult to turn up any minute to take over… :)

Wow – that was great! (must have missed it before). It was fun to hear your voice for the first time.
And I agree. I also much prefer to produce text. S and I were invited to a “Pot Luck of Words” party recently where each person had to bring something to read. It was great, but definitely a stepping out of my comfort zone (which is a good thing every once in a while). I was absolutely sh***ing myself when it was my turn. And that’s just *reading* something I’d practised rather than spontaneously articulating my own thoughts.

Strewth Pew!
I’d forgotten what your voice sounded like – good job on the podcast type affair!
