Over the last few days we’ve had a spate of vandalism in the neighbourhood. Lots of smashed bottles, dog shit not picked up (not quite in the same league, but annoying all the same) and most recently the panels ripped off of street lights leaving the bare wires exposed.
This evening, I phoned up the county council to report a nearby broken street light and the woman at the council sounded really frustrated – they’ve had a run of incidents recently and it sounds like they’re flat out with repairs. She expressed concern that one of the culprits would electrocute themselves soon and said she’d be contacting the police as well (although catching them in the act could be tricky).
A neighbour has just walked back past the broken street light and discovered another one has been ripped out since we’ve been past this afternoon. This time they’ve managed to remove some of the wires too so there’s no lighting in that area. The community officers have been called.
Let’s just hope they get caught before either one of the miscreants, or more likely a curious small child, gets killed.

The small child being killed I’d worry about. Not the miscreant.
(Am I turning into a Daily Mail reader?)

Crap. Am I a Daily Mail reader? No. But if one of the “poor, misguided youths” happened to get zapped well, I wouldn’t lose any sleep…

Well yes, I’m far more concerned about the small child too – especially as it’s right by a school.
Full praise to Worcestershire County Council, though. This morning the two lampposts were repaired, a community officer was being very visible near the school gates (I’m guessing to check if there was any other damage nearby), and two council workers were over clearing away broken sign debris that had also got smashed last night.
They hadn’t heard about the broken glass (I didn’t know who to report it to) so mentioned it to them and they’re going to phone it in and get it cleared up.
So all in all, very pleased how its been responded to. Until the next rampage of vandalism, I guess :(

I would say that dog poo was just as bad as broken glass. It shows a certain laziness and lack of care by the dog owner. Before ex took the dog with him I always cleared up after him, and he was a German Shepherd (the dog not the ex)so not just a neat wee poop to scoop up.
It is awful when this kind of thing happens but glad it isn’t going unchecked in your area. All it takes are a couple of morons to ruin a neighbourhood.
Note: they say they are bored, with nothing to do. They didn’t invent bored, there was nothing much to do in the late 80s when I was a teen but none of us would have even considered doing the kind of things done now. Lack of social inhibitor I think.
