Well, okay not quite… but a top chocolate-maker at Thorntons did end up making rather a fool of himself at rival store Hotel Chocolat (those lovely people who sent bloggers free review chocolate last Easter) and truffles were squashed in the process.
The article mentions that Mr Colenso has now resigned (asked to leave?) and they’re now looking for his replacement.
I wonder why he did it? Jealousy? Mental breakdown?
I note that the article refers to Hotel Chocolat as a rival to Thorntons, but realistically there is no comparison.
Thorntons has been going downhill for years – once the luxury stop on the high street, the chocolates are now nothing particularly special, don’t seem particularly high in cocoa solids compared to many luxury brands out there and are severely lacking in innovation.
I hope they find a suitable replacement for Mr Colenso who might breathe new life into the company and come up with more enticing chocolate.
Oh, and if Hotel Chocolat feel the need to send any Christmas chocolate my way… you know where I am…

I have not tried either brand. Do you think they are as good as Cadbury or is there no comparison?

I’d say Thornton’s are way better than Cadbury, but I agree they’re not the quality brand they used to be and still try to sell themselves as.
Montezuma’s have a store here now – it’s very popular.

Oooh a blatant attempt to get free chocolate via positive brand blogging
[takes notes]

Tami: difffernent market segments really – Cadbury is very much cheaper snack chocolate (although extremely nice) and is much lower in cocoa solids.
You can pretty much eat snack chocolate solidly all day (okay, it might not be very good for you!) Luxury chocolate is much higher in cocoa solids and you’d probably only need to eat a couple of squares before feeling satiated.
GoodTwin: I haven’t tried Montezuma’s – must put that on the list!
TigerFeet: I know, it was shamefully blatant. But it’s in a good cause.

I think you can order Montezumas online. They do some wonderful mixtures if you dare try them – chilli included…
