The Floods

25th July 2007 · 6 Comments

Over the last couple of days I’ve had several phone calls from family and friends checking to see how we are over the last week’s flooding. I’m pleased to report that we’ve been lucky. Very lucky.

Living in Worcester (and Akra working near Tewkesbury) we seem to be slap bang in the middle of the worst hit areas. Yet, living on a hill, I’ve seen nothing of the flood waters at all, our water hasn’t been cut off and our electricity supply has remained constant throughout. I’ve avoided driving into town (despite previous plans to take the boys to the library the first day of the school holidays) so haven’t personally seen any of the damage or had even the slightest inconvenience as a result.

Akra’s journey home on the Friday night was somewhat interesting. Leaving early, a half-hour journey took him over 4 and a half hours to get home, taking lots of alternate routes, eventually getting onto the M5 after pausing to phone me to let me know he wasn’t sure if he would get through the water on the slip road. A few hours later, that motorway would become impassable and many would spend the night in their cars, stuck.

His boss and some of his colleagues left a little later and ended up repeatedly returning to the office, unable to find a safe route home. It wasn’t until the landlord gave them a lift in his Landrover that they finally managed to get out. But again, the office has been fairly lucky – water and electricity still connected, no actual flooding on site.

As I understand it, there’s still a severe flood warnings in place for Gloucester, Tewkesbury and Worcester due to the River Severn, so we’ll have to see how that pans out, but gut feeling is that we’ve seen the worst of it (here at least).

All my sympathies to those who weren’t quite as lucky.

You are just so damn lucky! Glad to hear that you and yours are fine though. There is always that “it will never happen to me” instinct when you watch things on the TV, but of course that “not happening to me” is happening to a different “me” elsewhere which is always what makes me think we are lucky here. We had floods in 97, and then the quake a couple of months ago followed by another flood, I just count myself lucky that I am not one of the other “me’s” that it is happening to, which obviously doesn’t help them.

It does make me check my insurance policy though ….

Glad to hear that all is well chez Naan

Have been thinking about you, but assumed that you must all be OK as I’ve seen you out and about online :D

Glad you’re all OK. The way things are going, houses on hills, like yours, are going to attract a huge price premium in the future.

It is awful what is happening but that is nature for you I suppose. Reminding us who is really in charge.

You could always swap the trailer for a boat if it gets really bad!

Yes, we were wondering if we should be buying a motor boat rather than a new camper… does seem to be more logical given the weather…

The notice board at the church near to us reads:

Sunday 10am, Ark Building for Beginners, join us.

Glad to hear at least one bit of good news – that you have not been affected by the flooding – living in the North it’s hard to imagine what it must be like. My thoughts are with the people who have lost everything.
