Oh, it was good to see Richard Hammond back on the set of Top Gear. He looks tired and gaunt but otherwise seems his normal chirpy, cheeky self. The Hamster is intact.
It was quite impressive that Akra and I managed to watch Top Gear at all, actually. We rarely watch the telly, and the new season of Top Gear had been put on the calendar weeks in advance so we wouldn’t forget. But there we were, tuning in fifteen minutes early with a bowl of cherry pie and custard, settling in for an evening’s viewing.
But what WAS that dreadful show on before Top Gear?! Meerkat Manor – it looked more like Big Brother for rodents than a wildlife documentary. The voice over was particularly cringeworthy and saccharine. Can’t say that we were terribly impressed.
I think next week we’ll have to set an alarm for the television to be switched on at 8pm precisely.

Odd. Whilst the Meerkat thing is a continuation of the rapid decline of the BBC’s science and nature output, what I have seen of it is far more bearable than even two seconds of Top Gear. Still, whateve floats your boat, I guess. All cars look the same to me.
The meerkat voice-over is Bill Nighy, by the way.

Meerkat Manor was on Animal Planet over a year ago, it amuses the little ones.
Unfortunately hubby works every weekend on 12 hour shifts so gone are the days of watching this together. I + it and he watches it later in the week with the boys, the humour goes over the head of the 5 year olds but strangely they find a lot of what Jeremy and co. get up to very appealing! When they are older and out of the house hubby and I are going to do some of their road trips, not against the clock but they look so much fun.
And didn’t that accident look 100x worse than we originally saw on the news reports? Before it looked horrific but that was nothing compared to the footage they showed last night.

You actually need the alarm set for 7.55, since no television broadcaster manages to keep to the schedules these days – our video missed the first two minutes of Sunday’s edition.
There are times when the programme drives me nuts, but I enjoy it anyway!

I quite like meerkat manor. I don’t mind Bill Nighy’s voice over either. However, I think the perfect voice for a voice over is Bernard Hill’s. It makes me feel very relaxed ;)

KK: ah, but the cars are secondary. It’s just the fun, larking about and humour that really appeals to me… I quite like seeing the cars too, don’t get me wrong, but fundamentally they’re all blokes I’d really enjoy going down the pub with.
Paula: yes, I’d seen diagrams, but until you see the footage you don’t really appreciate how suddenly it all went wrong, do you? Some of the comments he made to camera beforehand were rather ironic in retrospect too…
Alley Katt: AND it was homemade! Well, in the sense that I made the pastry, opened a can of cherry pie filling and made up some Birds Custard…
GoodTwin: ah, good point. 7.55 it is.
Elle: I’m not sure I know Bernard Hill (but then I don’t watch much telly these days) – what’s he voiced over that I might recognise?

You might recognise him more as King Theoden out of Lord of the Rings. As for voice overs…goodness, he’s done so many. I’d end up filling your comments with them. If you’re interested, there’s always the Internet Movie Database you could use to find out more.

Elle: Ah, Theoden – yes, know him :)

Just to lower the tone a little, us non LOTR-ers instantly couple Bernard Hill with “gissajob” (Boys from the Blackstuff) :-)

Or the sunk captain of the Titanic.

Oh yes – forgot about him in the Titanic!
