Then again…

… maybe it’s better that the baby is going to be big… blood tests just came back, bile acids back up, back to the twice weekly visits to hospital :(

Student Midwives

22nd March 2004 · 10 Comments

Had another ultrasound scan today up at the hospital, and as I entered the room I was asked if I minded having a student midwife sit in on the consultation. Having no particular preference either way (although I’m fairly certain I wouldn’t want students sitting in during my labour!) I gave my assent and I can now thoroughly recommend having students sit in on consultations.

Why? Simply because EVERYTHING gets explained in the minutest of detail and in language that the layman can understand. It was great! Got to learn lots about what was going on and what they were looking for, and even better, the student asked all the “what do you mean by that?” type questions and saved me looking foolish! Great fun.

Baby was a little uncooperative though… kept kicking the umbilical cord away while the sonographer was trying to take the Dopplers (where they look at how good the blood flow is to the baby). Was very cute watching him wriggle around – even the student was cooing at the screen.

Was a little concerned though when the sonographer exclaimed at the end “well I don’t know WHAT you’re feeding it on, but your baby is growing VERY well!” Is that code for “your baby is going to be HUGE!”? I saw on the screen that the size of the head’s ‘dates’ was 34 weeks and I’m only 31 weeks pregnant … *gulp*.

Maybe I won’t rule out that epidural completely…

Happy Mothers’ Day!

21st March 2004 · 4 Comments

What a lovely day today!

Akra Jr gave me a lovely CD and card this morning (he’d already given me a little fairy cake he’d made and decorated at nursery, but decided to eat it himself instead!!). We went for a superb lunch at The Nightingale where Akra Jr behaved immaculately for the entire hour and a half. Then we went to collect the new pram, and here it is:

Isn’t it gorgeous?! It’s huge but looks very comfy. Apparently, it cost over £600 new and I got it for just over £100 so an absolute bargain!

My hand slipped…

… and I accidentally bought pushchair number 6

I would like to point out that a) it’s a second hand one from ebay and b) it’s a lovely Mamas and Papas one which has a separate carrycot and will be really really practical and I’ll use it lots… promise!

Oh heck… what have I done?! Oh well, if I hate it I can always ebay it on, right?!

Blank Mind Part 2

19th March 2004 · No Comments

Honestly, my mind isn’t much better today. I think it’s gone on vacation without me. I do hope it’s gone somewhere sunny and warm, one of us might as well be relaxing somewhere pleasant.

There were no Cadbury’s chocolate animal biscuits. I had to “make do” with Cadbury’s chocolate fingers. It’s a hard life.

Akra Jr has decided that in the blustery weather, he’d far rather float to nursery than walk. It sounds good to me. I asked him to let me know the technique if he discovered how to do it and to make sure he tied a piece of string to his wrist so I could stop him floating away too far. He looked at me a bit bemused after that. I just think he can’t appreciate that sometimes I can out-surreal him.

Blank Mind

18th March 2004 · 2 Comments

Bad night’s sleep last night, I just couldn’t get comfy no matter how many pillows.

Spent this morning waiting for an Argos “morning delivery” rather than go out to parent and toddler group, only for it to arrive after lunchtime.

Am going to fall asleep any second if I can get Akra Jr absorbed enough in telly not to notice.

Am fed up of ants.

Have sent a text to Akra telling him to come home via a Cadbury chocolate animal biscuit shop.

I suggest you visit some of my linked sites if you want an intelligent read today.

Surreal Conversations

17th March 2004 · No Comments

I really wish I knew how Akra Jr’s brain works. He’s really hypersensitive about anyone laughing at him, but during some of our little chats it’s a herculean effort not to collapse into giggles. Two from yesterday:

Akra Jr (pointing to my head): is that your forehead?
Me: yes, that’s right.
Akra Jr (pointing to his head): is that MY forehead?
Me: yes.
Akra Jr (looking very confused): so where’s the fivehead then?!

I can only assume he’s been thinking a lot about counting and how numbers work recently.

Akra Jr: ANT!
Me (not totally surprised or excited – see a previous entry): so there is.
Akra Jr: it has no mouth!
Me: yes, it does, love. It’s just really really small.
Akra Jr: can it talk?
Me: no, not in our language at least.

This latter conversation got repeated every time he saw one, which was a number of times. I’m still not quite sure what it is he was getting at, and if I answered his question even half way satisfactorily…

Sweet Nostalgia

16th March 2004 · 13 Comments

Had a bit of a blast from the past, today. I only popped into Tescos for some milk and a pot of cream to go with the apple turnover I intend to make this afternoon, when something caught my eye during a detour down the sweet aisle. It was a Wham Bar!

Major flash back to primary school, buying one of these (then) huge bars from the school tuck shop for 10p, losing half your teeth in the extremely hard but chewy strawberry stuff and having your head explode from the fizzy bits. These are truly the most memorable childhood sweet EVER!

Of course I bought one, what do you take me for?!

Verdict: disappointing, I’m afraid. Apart from the obvious reduction in size and increase in price (20p in our local Tescos), the manufacturers seem rather cautious of dental lawsuits and made it much more chewy and maleable than its predecessor. This means you’re hard pressed to catch a bite before the whole bar droops downwards into a perfect mimic of an advert for a certain male pharmaceutical we all keep getting spam comments for. The fizzy bits are just … well … not as fizzy as I remember and exist in a far fewer concentration. You’re lucky if you get more than one fizzy bit per bite.

So, I recommend buying one for a bit of tuck shop nostalgia, but buy yourself a pack of fizzy cola bottles to go with them…

Annual Review

Ugh. Whatever you do, please don’t suggest to Akra that I have a performance review this Mother’s Day…
