RIP Doc Martens

14th May 2003 · 12 Comments

My Dr Martens shoes died this morning. They’d been a bit poorly for a while now, but the stitching finally gave way at the back of the left shoe, and started rubbing my foot badly. I am trying to come to terms with their passing.

These are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned (I still own my doc marten boots but I don’t often wear them anymore as I don’t really do any heavy duty walking). I wear them pretty much every day as I tend to live in jeans and they don’t look too clumpy with them, plus did I mention they were really really comfortable.

After a little research, I finally managed to find a company on the web who sell dr martens online (I know my size, I really can’t be arsed to trek around town looking for a retailer to try them on). 50 quid now! Still, most “normal” good quality shoes in the shops seem to be about that price and don’t last as long. I realised after thinking about it for a while, that I’d bought my original pair 11 years ago – that’s not a bad age for a pair of shoes!! All I’ve got to do now is survive for the next 3-5 working days before they get delivered.

I am tempted here to make a really bad pun about them going off to shoe heaven because they had souls, but I respect you all too much for that.

Phew! Now I don’t feel so bad about my 11 year old black suede and 12 year old cherry Doc boots now.
I was feeling like a tramp for having such ancient shoes, but if yours have also lasted as long then they’re obviously meant to last.

CDs are in the post by the way, hope you like ‘em!

My doc boots are cherry too :o) Looking a bit battered and worn now, but still as comfy as ever. Hmm, should probably wear them while I’m waiting for the new shoes to arrive.

No you’re not a tramp… well … unless I am too! Actually, don’t answer that. But they do seem to last well – when I was working in London and having to wear smart “proper” ladies shoes I ended up buying a pair every six months because they wore through so quick, and they weren’t cheap either. Much prefer my docs.

Excellent re: the CDs! Shall look forward to listening to them!

Ohhh… can you post the URL where you found them online? I wonder if they’ll deliver to the states. I’ve got 3 pairs now.. having picked up the latest pair of boots in London when I was there. My oldest pair is about 9 years old now. But shops around here never have the cooler, more fun styles so I’d be glad to get them online. Plus they are so much cheaper over there… Here it’s about 60 quid ($100) for the low-tops and 75 ($120) for boots.

That makes a change – for an item of clothing to be cheaper here than in the States :o)

Yes, sorry, I should have included a link in the post. It’s the imaginatively titled http://www.shoe-shop.com – I’ll let you know how good they are in 3-5 days time!! Looking at their shipping they do send to the States (but is not cheap – 17 quid for delivery)

Am not having much luck with online retailers atm… ordered a DVD off Blackstar last week (to avoid Amazon) and they *still* haven’t delivered yet, despite sending the dispatch note on the 9th. ARGH!

Have you tried dabs .com? They have been fabulous with my dead computer bits and sending me hard copy of receipts etc.

Not recently no but I’m sure I’ve cursed all online retailing for myself somehow. Phoned up Blackstar and they’ve been great – sending me out another copy of the Buffy DVD as the first has obviously gone AWOL. Good job I’m behind on my DVD viewing or I’d have been gutted I didn’t get it on release.

I know this might be a bit ‘after-the-fact’ Pewari, but it’s all very relevant to me at the moment :) I came across your blog entry here whilst searching for ‘doc martens online’……the story goes like this – I only wear DM Brogue Shoes for work. They last me about tow years at a time. The last pair I bought about….two years ago :) They have reached the end of their life – it is time to buy another pair. However, after much researching, (and finally phoning the DM head Office somewhere ‘Up North’), I find that they’ve stopped making the brogue DM shoe in the UK……about two years ago..aarrgghh! I can but it from the USA online, but with yellow stitching on it. Hence the search. Your blog entry was on about the 4th Google page. Well, there is the whole story – I am now doomed to buying a normal ‘smooth’ pair of black docs..ugh! :)

They probably stopped making them as people complained they wore out too fast :oD

I bought a pair of black ‘classic’ Dr Martens shoes about 3 years ago for work. Finally expired last weeek. Best shoes ever bought. I’m a Church’s man by inclination but they don’t absorb shock waves – no protection for lower back. Being a shoe snob took me years to do the right thing. Got a pair of Docs.
Bought another pair on the internet. Looks exactly the same. But seem not to be as absorbent and a nightmare to break in. But I am a believer so will perservere. My old pair were made in England. The new pair in Thailand. Has there been a design change?

Can someone post Doc Marten’s head office tel. number or email adress. Can’t seem to find it even on Google.

    Cheers
